Regeneration masterplan.

A major regeneration masterplan for the regional Dutch city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The regenerated area is called Paleiskwartier in honour of the huge palace of justice.

The site has been planned on the lines of a traditional cityscape with high density mixed use buildings. A rectilinear street grid has been imposed but with contrasting forms, style and atmosphere.

High quality architectural design was insisted upon and a number of ‘star’ architects from all over Europe have designed the buildings.

Brief

• redevelopment of 10 ha of rundown industrial estate
• creation of transport interchange and creation of entrance to adjoining railway station
• 275,000 sq m (2,960 000 sq ft) of mixed use accommodation
• 710 dwellings
• secondary school, giant regional law court

Results

• as part of a historic city centre the regeneration area has a fine grained texture with limited but well-defined public spaces, mixed-use high-density development with cars tucked out of the way underground
• 20 years ago the Palace Quarter:  was a down-at-heel industrial area. Now it’s a dynamic regeneration hub
