Northampton Station Plans Unveiled

Network Rail has submitted plans to Northampton Borough Council for a major redevelopment of the town’s railway station designed by BDP. According to research carried out in 2009, the existing station does not meet Network Rail’s guidance for queuing and congestion at peak hours.

Project director Peter Jenkins said: “BDP’s proposals for Northampton Station have developed from a masterplan study for the site and the wider area. The design concepts for the station focus on creating a new gateway to the town, reflecting the important civic role of this building in the surrounding urban environment.”

The work includes a new station building, multi-storey car park, footbridge and platform canopies. The proposed materials combine solid concrete mass with warm timber structures.

BDP has developed the design with Hyder Consulting, for the client partners Network Rail and West Northamptonshire Development Corporation.

The scheme has been developed to the stage where it is ready to be taken forward as the catalyst for regeneration projects on neighbouring sites, including a 20,000sq m commercial development on an adjacent site.
