The campus is designed around the concept of ‘open accessible learning’.

Phase I consists of the Business School and the Learning Amenity building, comprising a Learning Resource Centre, auditorium, lecture theatre and catering facilities.

Phase II is the School of Computing and Information Systems.

Phase III is the School of Art, Media and Design.

Brief

  • To masterplan  St Peter’s Riverside, a second and entirely new campus for 8000 students for Sunderland University
  • design a ten-year, three-phase programme of building on the banks of the River Wear.

Results

  • the new buildings set trends for education based on flexibility and accessibility
  • the campus is a place of architectural distinction
  • buildings and spaces accentuate warm microclimates in the chill former shipyard setting
  • awards include RIBA  Awards 1995 and 1997, Civic trust award 1998
