Alder Hey Children’s Hospital has won the BBC People’s Choice Award Building of the Decade at the Insider Property North West Awards held at Manchester Central on 17 May. Decided by the public, the vote was organised by BBC North West Tonight in conjunction with Insider Media and Alder Hey was selected as one of an initial shortlist of 25 projects across five north west regions. It won the Merseyside category in the first round and was then voted overall winner in the Grand Final from a shortlist of five.
Accepting the award, architect principal and project director Ged Couser commented: "The Trust came to us with an amazing aspirational brief to design the kind of hospital that had not been seen before, that would provide world class care and I think we have achieved that aim.”
At the ceremony we also won Architect Practice of the Year in recognition of our design talents and range of high quality projects across the region. The judges said BDP's portfolio expressed diversity and quality. Projects included Ordsall Chord, which was hailed as a ‘statement piece.’
