Project details

A secondary school for 900 pupils with specialist technology status

Our concept for the  new school was to provide three galleried teaching levels grouped around a central social and resource space at its heart.

The large central space allows informal interaction between pupils and staff at various times, and also provides space for learning in large or small groups.

Internally the library block sits over the central space as a distinct element accessed by high level walkways. The translucent internal wall of this block allows the northern light to filter through.

Brief

  • an entirely new school on the existing grounds to cater for 900 pupils
  • retain facilities for extended learning which the school had been offering for 50 years

Results

  • flexible adaptable space for learning in the 21st century
  • LABC Built in Quality Award (Best Education Building, East Midlands) 2008

Integrated services

architecture, environmental engineering, structural engineering, landscape architecture, acoustics
