Facts

Location Client Cost Completion
Canary Wharf, London, UK Canary Wharf Group £70m 2003 and 2008

Project details

A below ground retail environment at Canary Wharf.

Jubilee Place comprises a primary, below ground, mall with full height glazed shop frontages, an elliptical court with integral stepped seating and high quality food hall. These in turn are supplemented by three mezzanine areas with onward connections to adjacent headquater buildings and the new Jubilee Park. The primary mall also links to adjacent buildings and Canary Wharf underground station.

Glazed roof lights provide daylight to the mall, views upward towards external landscape and buildings and alsoprovide vital orientation.

Brief

  • undertake a series of architectural feasibility studies for the below ground site
  • develop a mall design that would minimise the ‘subterranean feel of the site
  • provide upward visual links to the surrounding buildings and landscape

Results

  • a successful and highly popular shopping destination in a single mall
  • pedestrian links connect to other nearby buildings giving them direct access to the retail
  • clear links to underground station
  • as a subsequent commission, BDP has been asked (in 2008) to revisit the project
