Ohgishima, Japan JFE Group 2050

Project details

Through OHGISHIMA 2050, the JFE Group aims to convert their Steel’s East Works located in Kawasaki City into new industrial sites and jobs that will benefit the country over the next 100 years.

JFE aims to create fields of innovation and enterprise that will address the complex challenges involved in the pursuit of carbon neutrality, next generation urban transport and disaster response.

The 222-ha site is a brownfield reclaimed land along the coast of Tokyo Bay with direct access from Haneda Airport via Shuto Expressway Bayshore Line.  Area zoning is key to the land use strategy and will be implemented to promote carbon neutrality and innovation across the entire district, through the deployment of cutting-edge technologies, the installation of hydrogen supply facilities and similar initiatives.

The Lead Area zone will promote the early-development of cutting-edge technologies and energy supplies. The Co-Creation area will focus on partnership initiatives with government and private sector companies and adjacent will be Next-generation Industrial & Mixed-use Development Zones” housing leading-edge enterprises and facilities.

At present, Nippon Koei and BDP are focusing on a benchmark study consisting of public funding waterfront brownfield projects to help JFE secure government investment for the Ohgishima masterplan project.   The case studies are divided into Industrial Land and Reclaimed Land from across the globe – all demonstrating how brownfield sites can be transformed into innovation city quarters that can drive economic and social benefits.
