The masterplan delivers exceptional facilities and an estate that enables and encourages a new way of learning, researching and working. The campus will be consolidated with new builds planned alongside refurbishment and redevelopment of existing buildings, creating flexibility and variety to accommodate different student needs.
The first phase features four new accommodation blocks for the business school and teaching facilities for the Faculty of Development and Society, alongside refurbishing the student union, creating a University Green, and planning long-term maintenance.

“We’re delighted that the council has approved the first phase of our campus plan. This development will play a major part in delivering on our ambitions as a university, including our contribution to the city and region as set out in our recently launched Civic University Agreement.
“These new facilities are designed to deliver significant benefits for our students, and to make Sheffield Hallam an even more attractive place to study and work, whilst also enhancing a key gateway to Sheffield city centre.”

Gateway campus to the city and industry
Sheffield Business School acts as a gateway to the city campus and the city of Sheffield. It has been designed to promote civic and industrial engagement by providing a heart in which community, business, and student are encouraged to mingle.
One of the key ways in which this development acts as a collaborative campus gateway is through the innovative ‘Knowledge Exchange’. The Knowledge Exchange is an open and accessible ground floor which unites staff, students, visitors, and businesses in a new destination for both the university and the city.

A social and environmental approach
In response to the climate emergency, Sheffield Hallam released a comprehensive carbon brief for all buildings coming out of the masterplan. As health and wellbeing affect the productivity and general happiness of staff and students, BDP made sustainability an integral part of our design from an early stage.
A bespoke holistic Sustainability Tracker has been developed for the new buildings, and adopts inputs from a range of recognized standards including BREEAM and WELL. The tracker has also been tailored to consider local social and geographical considerations including the zero carbon by 2030 target set by Sheffield City Council.
The project, developed through extensive consultation with universities and local stakeholders, aligns with the city’s regeneration strategy and provides local skills and employability programmes, including work experience, apprenticeships, and career events.

“It was so important that the first application for blocks A-D were approved by the city council and we are so happy that it has been. It is a wonderful recognition of the hard work that has gone into designing an ambitious, high quality and sustainable place for the university and the city.
“As part of the Sheffield Hallam Alliance, we will continue to reinforce and design human-centred places that provide meaningful space for civic engagement, collective congregation and social interactions at all levels, ensuring this is a campus that benefits students, staff and all of Sheffield’s citizens.”
