Tim Leach, BDP’s London head of Culture and Heritage will be speaking at the LIBER 38th Annual Conference 2009 - “Innovation Through Collaboration” which takes place in Toulouse, France from Tuesday 30 June to Friday 3 July.
Tim’s talk – “Transforming library environments: interdisciplinary approach to master planning university facilities”, explores an interdisciplinary approach – the university, library and consultant teams working together – to master planning a complex number of library facilities at University College London. The case study provides an opportunity to review the issues facing many higher education organisations that manage a range of library environments (the UCL estate includes the historically important 1820’s Grade I listed Main library together with a number of less significant late 20th century buildings), best practice and emerging patterns of study in the university and the wider academic context, together with the pragmatic issues of funding and delivering projects. At the heart of the master planning exercise is the collaborative approach between client and multi-disciplinary design team to identify, explore and define the most appropriate design and implementation strategies to transformation these library environments, to meet the expectations of an international student group and the aspirations of a broader academic community.
