Brown Hart Gardens shortlisted for planning award

Brown Hart Gardens has been shortlisted in the best new public space category of the London Planning Awards. The scheme, which creates a new public garden in the heart of London’s Mayfair, was designed by BDP for client Grosvenor and opened in July this year.

Situated on an elevated public square over a Grade II listed substation immediately adjacent to Oxford Street, the project integrates a high quality scheme within a residential area and overcame many complex historical and structural constraints, as well as planning restrictions, to create a simple green space in the heart of London.

Flexible planting and seating, together with a new pavilion café designed to be transparent and evoke the forms of the original building, provide facilities for relaxation, recreation and community events all year round.

The awards will be announced next year on 4 February and if successful BDP will have won this award category three years in a row with Margaret McMillan Park in 2012 and Ladywell Fields in 2013. BDP also won the award in 2009 with Cornmill Gardens.
