BDP and Opus International Consultants led a design consortium for the Watermark project which is the first stage of Te Papa Otakaro /Avon River Precinct which has opened in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Watermark, an exhibition site for the precinct, spans the area on the true left bank of the river from the Antigua boatsheds to the Montreal Street Bridge. It features significant ecological works, a boardwalk, seating, new plantings and advanced LED lighting.
Opus Southern Regional Manager and Project Leader Glen Hughes says Opus is excited about recreating Christchurch’s green heart and setting the stage for a more vibrant and prosperous city. He believes the design for the precinct reflects the aspirations of Cantabrians by providing a sustainable space for relaxation and recreation.
“Watermark provides the public with a snapshot of the precinct’s entire design concept plan which Opus has created in collaboration with international design firm BDP. The design celebrates the natural, spiritual and ecological significance of the Avon River while improving accessibility and enhancing the river’s rich cultural, heritage and natural values. A regenerated Avon River will draw both locals and visitors back to the central city and it will become a place for relaxation, recreation and enjoyment for people of all ages.”
The consortium partners look forward to starting work on the next stage of the precinct later this year.
CERA and CCDU have put together a number of videos to give an indication of what is to come.
