Funding secured for St James Quarter

The St James Quarter development in Edinburgh has been given a funding boost which will restart the £850m regeneration scheme. The deal was made between Edinburgh council, the Scottish government and developer TIAA Henderson Real Estate (TH Real Estate).

BDP and Allan Murray Architects masterplanned the scheme which was granted outline planning consent in 2009. It will see the 1970s St James Centre demolished to make way for new shops, bars and restaurants and two hotels, doubling the size of retail provision. The scheme will also include homes, offices and create a new public square.

Located in a World Heritage Site, the masterplan's vision is to create a retail circuit that engages with the three natural levels of the site, in addition to improving the quality and quantity of Edinburgh’s retail offer. The development is multi-use at upper levels, above the retail, to create a vibrant and sustainable new city quarter.

BDP is joint architect with Allan Murray Architects for the scheme which is now expected to start on site in 2015.
