Work started this week on the first new clinical buildings linked to the £420m Brighton 3Ts redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
The preparatory phase of the project is due to complete this autumn and will involve the construction of two temporary buildings.
Duane Passman, director of the 3Ts redevelopment said: “We are now moving into the clinical phase of our decant programme. This is when the redevelopment becomes real for most people, with the beginning of construction on site. Both of these temporary buildings are key to unlocking the space we need for the redevelopment to go ahead. This is an exciting time. What starts as the foundations for a temporary building today will end with patients being treated in brand new, permanent facilities of the highest quality.”
Funding for the new hospital was approved by HM Treasury in May this year, and BDP is currently working closely with Laing O’Rourke and the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust to develop designs for the main building as the redevelopment progresses to Full Business Case stage. Expected construction start time is programmed for autumn 2015.
