International competition for Yangzhou Ecological and Technological New City

BDP has won second prize in an international competition to plan a new city in China.

In 2011 two cities were merged, Yangzhou and Jiangdu, to create the new Greater Yangzhou. Located in central Greater Yangzhou, the new Ecological and Technological New City covers an area of 8,100 hectares. BDP was invited to take part in an international competition for the conceptual design of this new city. The team visited the site several times during the design process and met with local administrators to create the most practical and original planning concepts.

A major challenge was the protected ecological zone to the north. Working within this context, the design provides an economically advantageous industrial development scheme which included new types of agriculture, tourism, and eco-business. Construction of a new high-speed railway station creates a focus for the scheme and will improve the quality of the core area.

The scheme also includes city centre and eastern waterfront residential units, a public square, ecological regeneration projects, linear parks to the north, an innovation research and development zone, and an eco-education project.
