BDP’s design for BOXPARK Birmingham has officially been given the green light, marking a transformative moment for the city’s iconic Digbeth district.
Set within the historic Floodgate Street railway arches, this ambitious project will redefine the area, blending its industrial past with a bold new vision for community spaces. As part of an ongoing partnership with BOXPARK, following successful projects in Croydon, Wembley, and Liverpool, this latest development promises to create a dynamic hub for events, independent businesses, and cultural experiences.
With the planning approval secured, former tanneries and blacksmiths will now give way to an exciting new breed of industrious, creative industries this emerging, creative hub of the city. BOXPARK Birmingham will repurpose the grand railway arches with its signature use of recycled shipping containers, creating a vibrant and contemporary destination that reflects the creative energy of Digbeth. Located just a short walk from the Bullring and Grand Central, the development will blend seamlessly into one of Birmingham’s most distinctive areas, recently named the ‘coolest neighbourhood in Britain’ by The Sunday Times.
Gavin Elliott, Principal at BDP, said: "Designing BOXPARK Digbeth has been about embracing the character of the historic Floodgate Arches and making something that truly immerses itself in the spirit of the area. By repurposing these impressive railway arches, we've crafted a space that feels authentic, contemporary, and true to the BOXPARK vision. This venue will bring fresh life and vibrancy to the city’s Eastside, giving people a place to come together to meet, eat, attend events, and enjoy live experiences in a way that reflects the creativity of Birmingham. It’s fantastic to see the project given planning approval, and we look forward to working with BOXPARK to deliver this incredible new place within this dynamic community.”
BOXPARK Birmingham will not only transform Digbeth’s architectural landscape but also serve as a new cultural hotspot, enhancing creativity and collaboration among local businesses, artists, and residents. This development represents a further evolution in the lineage of BDP’s projects with BOXPARK, reaffirming the company’s commitment to creating places that reflect the vibrancy and diversity of the communities they serve.
Ben McLaughlin, chief operating officer at BOXPARK, said: “We’re thrilled to have received planning approval and are excited to move forward with the opening of our new site in this vibrant city. This will be a big project for the team and our aim is to carefully restore the Floodgate Street Arches while giving it a new lease of life.
“Digbeth’s eclectic and creative business community is perfect match for our ethos of supporting and championing local, independent talent. This marks an exciting new chapter for BOXPARK, and we look forward to contributing to the area’s continued growth.”
