Ged Couser, Architect Principal at BDP has been elected as the new Chair of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) North West Regional Council. Starting in January 2025, Ged will bring his extensive experience and commitment to inclusive, sustainable design to this influential role.
Reflecting on the appointment, Ged said: "I am absolutely delighted to have been elected as the RIBA North West Regional Chair and I would like to thank everyone who supported and voted for me. I am committed to championing the development of an inclusive, sustainable, and forward-thinking architectural profession that serves both people and planet. I look forward to promoting community engagement in design and ensuring that our work reflects the voices of those it serves."
The RIBA North West region represents more than 4,000 members and 300 chartered practices, encompassing a diverse geographical area that includes Manchester, Liverpool, Chester, Blackpool, Lancaster, Carlisle, the Lake District National Park, and the Isle of Man. The Regional Council collaborates with a vibrant network of volunteers, universities, local authorities, and other stakeholders to advocate for better buildings, communities, and environments through architecture.
Ged’s election comes as a natural progression in his leadership journey. In addition to his role at BDP, where he leads the architect profession group in the Manchester studio, Ged was formally the President of the Manchester Society of Architects. His architectural career is particularly distinguished in the healthcare sector, where he has led the design and delivery of major projects both in the UK and internationally.
Notable projects under his leadership include Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, recognised with National RIBA and RICS Awards as well as multiple healthcare design accolades. Ged also acted as Project Director for the new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Merseyside and the Christie Paterson building in Manchester, two transformative projects enhancing cancer care and research in the region.
Beyond his project work, Ged is an active member of the RIBA Places Matter North West Design Review Panel and is an external examiner at Lancaster University School of Architecture. His dedication to elevating architectural standards and fostering collaboration across the profession will be pivotal in his new role.
The RIBA North West Council’s activities include recognising outstanding architecture through its awards programme, advocating for the profession, and supporting regional branches to deliver events and initiatives for members. Under Ged’s leadership, the Council will continue to amplify the voice of its members, both regionally and nationally.
