In a celebration of innovative and impactful design, BDP has secured three awards at the 2023 REARD Design Awards. The awards ceremony recognised BDP's commitment to excellence in urban renewal, cultural tourism, and global design.
The Si'fang Road Precinct, nestled within the historical and heritage rich Shibei District of Qingdao, emerged as a standout project for BDP, winning two Gold Awards at the REARD Design Awards: 'Creative Design Competition of Cultural Tourism & Rural Revitalisation' and the 'Urban Renewal Design Award'.
Spanning 130,000 sq m, the Si'fang Road Precinct project aims to acquire and preserve 106 historically significant buildings. The key focus of the project is analysing and optimising spatial structure, urban interfaces, and future development potential of the Si'fang Road area. Simultaneously, the project prioritises planning and designing a people-centric community for the initial prototype section of the Si'fang Road area's public spaces, preserving local cultural characteristics.
Through a commitment to six emerging industries - cultural experiences, creative retail, dining, leisure and entertainment, apartment accommodations, and industrial offices, the project aims to enhance spatial quality, optimise traffic structure, and inject commercial and cultural vitality into the area.
BDP's excellence extends to the realm of smart city planning, as demonstrated by the Shanghai Jiading Jiabao Smart Bay Future City Practice Zone. Awarded the 2023 REARD Global Design Silver Award, this project exemplifies BDP's commitment to creating sustainable and technologically advanced urban environments.
Situated in the industrial park of Jiading North Ecological Corridor, the Jiabao Smart Bay Future City Practice Zone has a total planned GFA of 976,000 sq m and will serve as a smart service core for the entire area, predominantly occupied by R&D facilities and residential buildings. BDP's masterplan follows a nature friendly approach, respecting the surrounding dense forests and water systems.
In the north, BDP plans to create a nature hub with small scale buildings that are seamlessly integrated with the local ecology. In the south, BDP plans to include several large scale buildings which will contribute to a unique skyline facing towards downtown Jiading. The project's 'people first and low carbon' approach, coupled with the 'one core, one corridor, two hubs' design framework, ensures a dynamic future for Jiabao Smart Bay that is not only safer but more efficient and environmentally friendly. The plans also include five space strategies, three industrial planning concepts, and three smart technology routes.
Stephen Gillham, Head of our Shanghai and MENA studios, said "Our success at the 2023 REARD Design Awards highlights our dedication to pushing the boundaries of design and crafting spaces that seamlessly blend heritage, functionality, and sustainability. I am honoured and proud of the work we have done and will continue to develop design led projects that offer versatility and innovation, setting new standards for the future of urban living."
