Barclays has opened its new business campus in Tradeston, Glasgow. BDP was commissioned to light Clyde Place House, a B listed warehouse dating back to the 1870s, one of five buildings on the site. Refurbished as part of the new £330M business campus, the concept was inspired by the area’s rich shipbuilding history.
The building was stripped back to its structure and internal joists, an empty, flexible space, a unique venue for events. The void was flooded with RBGW light from each level, creating a deeply saturated coloured light environment. Narrow beam downlights at high level cast dappled light through the joists and create a gentle wave-like effect that moves across the space, the movement and colours controlled by real-time weather data, such as air pressure and wind speed. This results in a constantly changing light show; a dynamic display of coloured light with subtle shades. These fittings are independently controllable and programmed to dim subtly throughout the evening, simulating movement throughout the space and creating an immersive environment for events.
The ambient lighting was provided from a clean and minimal family of fittings allowing the art installations to shine through. The facades have been retained and cleaned and listed facade on the main plaza was illuminated with a dynamic media installation to create a unique identity for the new business campus.
BDP was also responsible for all lighting to the Clyde Place public realm, the energy centre designed by our Glasgow studio, and the Clyde & Grain restaurant.
