Maldon, UK | Maldon District Council | 2018 |
Maldon District Council commissioned our planning and urban design teams, working together, to produce an innovative and bespoke design guide Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) to guide the future development of Maldon. The aim of the SPD was to inform the process of design, from the inception of proposals through to planning approval, and encourage developers to engage with the council to create high quality developments. It also helped the council to form a design checklist for assessing design quality in new development proposals.
Maldon District’s local and wider site context played an important role in the creation of the key design principles, with a number of important features of the land benefitting from historical and environmental protection through designations such as SSSI, Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings, Scheduled Ancient Monuments and Local Wildlife Sites.
Approximately 18 months of research and development was undertaken to create an appropriate design process suitable to Maldon’s unique character. The SPD was adopted in December 2017, and recognised for its design achievement in June 2018 with an award for design excellence at the 2018 Planning Awards.
