Medini Staff Training Centre, Malaysia

Facts

Location Size Completion
Johor Bahru, Malaysia 16,754 sqm 2020

Project details

BDP was invited to participate with a Design & Build contractor to propose a mixed-used staff training facility in Medini Iskandar, Johor Bahru. Supporting the training facility includes an accommodation block to house 40 staff and an office block for 50 staff.

Inspired by the social gathering spaces around buildings of the traditional Malaysia kampong village, the building concept centres on its approach towards an interactive-based learning model. To achieve this, blocks are placed around a central courtyard, which encourages visual engagement from recreation spaces towards the training facility.

As a design response to Malaysia’s tropical climate, deep overhang canopies provide shade and comfort to external teaching and informal gathering areas set in the green courtyard heart space. Water sensitive urban design strategies integrated into the design create an accessible landscape for the occupants to enjoy whilst providing sustainable rain water retention and management solutions.
