Project details

This is one of four new academic buildings forming part of the University of York’s Heslington east campus designed to support the growth of start-ups in creative, IT, digital and media sectors.

The Catalyst is formed from blocks of accommodation bisected by a central atrium. This simple approach helps tie in the massing of the smallest building in the cluster with its larger neighbours.

Brief

  • provide a flexible office building that supports knowledge transfer activities between the university and start-ups
  • shared aesthetic with the neighbouring departmental facilities

Results

  • a new academic hub creating networking and collaboration opportunities for its occupants
  • 3,000sqm scheme in keeping with the scale and proportions of the surrounding buildings
