Architectural sensitivity was key in the lighting intervention; a minimalist approach was favoured by the design team to ensure the architecture was allowed to shine without competition.

To achieve this, the lighting was designed to complement rather than dominate the space. The main challenge was to uplight the domed roof while providing focused lighting for mezzanine exhibits without overwhelming the architecture. The solution involved three custom 9.5m diameter suspended rings with integrated fluorescent uplighting, along with a curved track system for targeted spotlighting. This approach created a balanced lighting scheme, ensuring the gallery was suitable for hosting the glamorous 1950s ball gown collection while preserving the historic integrity of Octagon Court.
