Project details

Designed in collaboration with the University of Technology the Krimpenerwaad town hall brings together residents, entrepreneurs, and institutes from four municipalities under one roof. Located within the picturesque polder landscape of the Netherlands, the architecture showcases the concept of a 'floating building'. The design deftly adapts to the changing levels of subsidence as the peat meadow soil slowly sinks by nearly half a centimetre each year.

Drawing inspiration from the polder landscape the geometry of the building mirrors its surroundings. Three atriums traverse the structure, mirroring the polder ditches that lie beneath, while also dividing the space into four distinct working areas, each catering to the needs of its respective municipality. The south side facade displays a vertical rhythm of slats, reminiscent of ploughing and sowing lines etched across the neighbouring landscape.

Deeply rooted in the local community the town hall employs carefully chosen regional materials. The design celebrates its circular economy approach by leaving the proposed timber frame visible throughout to provide a welcoming atmosphere. The result is an ambitious vision for a sustainable carbon-neutral building which is seamlessly interwoven with the polder structure of Krimpenerwaard.
