Project details

The Kleurenbuurt area is located in the close proximity of the city centre of Zaandam, in between the Gouw river and the Darwinpark. It is home to a number of large scale amenities, such as a sports accommodation, a swimming pool, a library and a large supermarket. This gives the area both an urban quality as well as, owing to its location, a natural quality. The neighbourhood, constructed in the 1960s, consists of low rise family housing directly mixed with large scale apartment slabs, interspersed with more low rise boxes containing the various amenities. This, combined with the very spacious setup of the continuous routes through the area, give the physical centre of the Kleurenbuurt an appearance that is more business-like than it is residential.

It is in this spacious layout that the opportunity for densification is present. The existing spatial structure of the Kleurenbuurt forms the basis for the new framework of public spaces, allowing for independent planning and realisation of the different project sites. Furthermore, the existing structure will be made smaller and more ‘edgy’ at strategically located sites, creating a clear structure consisting of streets and squares.
By removing the road along the Gouw river a new park for the Kleurenbuurt is created, while strategically placed green extensions in between the housing blocks along the water created connections with the new squares around the amenities. Another green strip with a water feature connects the park with the Weer and the Darwinpark.
All amenities will be further concentrated in the centre of the neighbourhood. By combining these with additional housing program and specifically designed pleasant public spaces, a bustling and vivid central area will be created, linked together by a small, car-free shopping street and broad sidewalks. By making the existing profile of the central thoroughfare street of the Vermiljoenweg a lot smaller, room is created for the realization of urban, stately building blocks and a proper boulevard through the centre.
