Sustainability
Sustainability is central to our design philosophy at BDP. We are dedicated to creating places that are not only environmentally, socially, and economically advanced but also enhance the health and productivity of their users. Our in-house Sustainability team drives this vision, partnering with clients to set ambitious sustainability goals and tackle climate and biodiversity challenges from the outset.
We assess the full impact of each project we undertake – considering resource use, transport, and waste management – while staying ahead of evolving legislative, economic, and technological trends.
We offer a comprehensive range of services, including life-cycle assessment, circular economy, and energy consultancy. With expertise in BREEAM and LEED, we deliver transformative solutions that meet today’s environmental, social, and economic demands.
Sustainability highlights
The Good City: Achieving zero carbon
Cities house 56% of people but emit 70% of CO2. Good Cities must decarbonise, retrofit, and adopt smart energy systems.
Applied Innovation
Through harnessing emerging tech, BDP continues to drive meaningful change through innovation.
Environmental action
With the built environment responsible for a third of global emissions, we know it’s time to shift our own perspective.

Let’s Decarbonise
Our campus framework explores the interconnected layers that deliver a route to Net Zero Carbon.
BDP’s Science Based Targets
To support the global climate goal to half global emissions before 2030, BDP has set Science Based Targets (SBTs).

Low Carbon Now
WorldGBC aims for net-zero operational and 40% less embodied carbon by 2030. How can we act now?
How design drives embodied carbon
We analysed 44 of our multi-unit residential projects to highlight the critical role of early design decisions and strategies in reducing impact.

We support clients in reducing emissions across every stage of their estates and assets. Our work on embodied carbon and the circular economy uses detailed life cycle assessments and advanced modelling to guide smarter material choices and ensure adaptability over time. Estate decarbonisation strategies are designed to improve performance and balance cost with efficiency, identifying clear pathways to net zero. For new developments, our expertise in net zero carbon ensures that operational and embodied impacts are minimised through holistic design, delivering buildings that are efficient, sustainable and ready for the future.

Our consultants combine strategic insight with technical expertise to deliver sustainability strategy frameworks that achieve measurable results. Using in-house tools, we monitor progress and support regenerative design. Environmental assessment specialists work closely with design teams, going further than certification to integrate sustainability goals throughout the project journey. To ensure performance continues beyond completion, we use soft landings and post occupancy evaluation. These processes help align design intent with user experience, and they provide a clear route to long-term improvements in energy, comfort and efficiency.

Our ecologists create strategies that protect habitats, enhance biodiversity and contribute to more resilient urban environments. Early involvement in projects allows us to embed ecological value from the outset, while targeted off-site measures deliver additional benefits where needed. Alongside this, our planning specialists advise both public and private sector clients on the complexities of the planning system. With sustainable development at the core of every application, we offer clear guidance, increase the likelihood of success and remain engaged throughout the process.

We design environments that promote health, comfort and a sense of connection. Air quality, lighting, acoustics, water and thermal comfort are carefully considered to create spaces where people thrive. Guided by the WELL standard and wider wellbeing principles, we introduce healthy materials and innovative design features that improve everyday experience. The focus on wellbeing through design ensures that our projects do more than meet functional needs.

We help clients prepare for a changing climate by embedding resilience into both new and existing assets. Projects are developed with parameters that address flood risk, overheating, storm events and other climate pressures. Using climate data and scenario planning, we create robust design solutions that remain effective under different future conditions. This approach safeguards investment, protects communities and ensures assets continue to perform in the face of environmental change.
