A wave of innovation
Craig Howard looks at the latest in a series of world class sporting facilities arriving in the Middle East.

In the last 5-10 years, the middle east has emerged as a global leader in the creation of world-class sports and leisure facilities. The region’s bold ambition to redefine urban landscapes and deliver innovative, state-of-the-art destinations has paved the way for transformative projects that resonate on an international scale. Surf Abu Dhabi is a prime example. It is a groundbreaking development that will soon host the world’s largest man-made wave pool.
The completion of this ambitious project, is a testament to Abu Dhabi’s vision to become a global hub for surfing tourism. Working alongside the Kelly Slater Wave Company and Modon Properties, BDP’s team developed the concept design for Surf Abu Dhabi, crafting a facility that is as architecturally striking as it is functional.
Situated on the pristine shores of Hudayriyat Island, Surf Abu Dhabi captures the spirit of the surrounding aquatic environment while drawing the attention of the international surfing community. Spanning 75,000 square metres, the facility’s wave basin is three metres deep and can accommodate up to 30 surfers at a time. Boasting waves that reach heights of 9 to 10 feet, the basin features a unique reef design and employs one of the world’s largest winch gearboxes - technology tested at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California. The result is a high-performance surfing experience that includes the world’s longest ride, biggest barrel, and largest man-made wave pool.

Surf Abu Dhabi comprises two buildings – Surf Club and Beach Club – and an events lawn. Beach Club features two restaurant floors, a bar, and an infinity pool overlooking the basin. The architectural vision for the whole facility seamlessly integrates interior and exterior spaces, using natural stones, blackened steel, and timber to establish a cohesive and inviting language. Drawing inspiration from the craftsmanship of ancient surfboard design, the club features rich textures and warm tones. Tactile materials, subtle colour accents, and engraved wayfinding elements enhance the welcoming atmosphere, creating a destination that celebrates competitive sport and leisure in equal measure.
The Surf Club stands as a beacon of sophistication, blending elegance with simplicity. The journey to the wave basin begins at the entrance, where visitors encounter striking architectural features, including a cascading staircase, link bridges, and shallow pools of water. Designed to cater to both amateur and professional surfers, the VIP Lounge provides a relaxing retreat adorned with soft furnishings and curated displays of surfing history. This adaptable space also transforms effortlessly for private functions and live events.

The Beach Club introduces a biophilic design approach that harmonises natural materials and lush landscaping to create a vibrant communal space. Guests are afforded the perfect vantage point to watch surfers take on the waves and with 20m x 10m LED screens, displaying live events and updates, spectators won’t miss any of the action. Guests can also enjoy freshly prepared meals at the while watching surfers take on the dynamic wave basin, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.

Abu Dhabi Surf is not just an architectural feat but a celebration of surfing heritage, innovation, and sustainable urban planning. It exemplifies our commitment to designing spaces that encourage active communities while contributing to the region’s long-term vision for tourism and leisure. By thoughtfully integrating elements of nature, culture, and sport, we have created a venue that will undoubtedly become a landmark for Abu Dhabi.
Throughout the development, I was reminded of the importance of collaboration in achieving bold ambitions. Partnering with visionary organisations like the Kelly Slater Wave Company and Modon Properties has allowed us to push boundaries and redefine what is possible in sports architecture. This development is a milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey towards becoming a dynamic, globally recognised destination in sport and we have created a place where innovation, culture, and sport converge to inspire generations to come.
