Boxpark Croydon creates a unique dining experience that focuses on small independent traders.
The design creates a semi-enclosed market hall - like Covent Garden or La Boqueria in Barcelona - with a central piazza surrounded by food and beverage units, enhanced with outdoor terrace spaces. The change of level between East Croydon Station entrance and Dingwall Road enables multiple entrances adding spatial interest and animation.
Shipping containers are an intrinsic component of the Boxpark brand. We used 96 containers in total, four of which are unaltered, and introduced new materials such as the polycarbonate roof supported by a steel roof structure and integrated them into the core Boxpark design language.
The pared down raw aesthetic of the design integrates into the core Boxpark brand and, together with graphic designers Filthy Media and retail designers Brinkworth, a very strong graphic and visual identity has been applied rigorously throughout the scheme.
Boxpark has proved to be very popular and has transformed the quality of the retail and leisure offer in Croydon.
Over 10 years, Boxpark Croydon has operated alongside two more Boxpark branches at Shoreditch and Wembley to achieve the following social-economic impact:
- Support more than 330 independent businesses
- Directly create over 800 FTE jobs and £84m in wages - majority held by residents local to each site
- Generate over £250m spend onsite and across the local town centers
- Generate an additional gross value added (GVA) of over £130m to the London economy in new jobs and business investment
