The Castle Mills development forms part of the first phase of the York Castle Gateway Masterplan delivered by BDP for the City of York Council in March 2018. The vision for the site located by the River Foss in this historic Castle Gateway area is a vibrant city-living neighbourhood of approximately 110 market rate and affordable apartments with commercial uses at the ground floor level.

The new pedestrian and cycle bridge provides a new connection across the Foss for the local residents and visitors alike, which improves pedestrian and cyclist permeability across the larger Piccadilly and city centre areas. The associated pedestrian routes also link the scheme to the Castle Museum, whose long term strategy is to develop a new main entrance with a public connection to the Foss.

Castle Mills provides high quality apartments overlooking the Castle Museum, Clifford’s Tower and Piccadilly. Penthouses on top floors help create an interesting and varied roofscape complimenting York’s historic skyline. The ground floor will feature new commercial spaces to create an active street frontage along Piccadilly as well as a new dynamic public square allowing access to the riverside and the bridge.
