Grange University Hospital (previously known as the Specialist and Critical Care Centre) is the centrepiece of a new model of healthcare delivery serving over 600,000 people, dealing with all major emergencies as well as treating patients needing complex emergency or critical care. It has 471 beds and is home to more than 40 specialist services.

The BREEAM Excellent hospital is designed to be flexible, adaptable and expandable. The use of universal rooms allows operational flexibility and blurring of departmental boundaries to deal with changing demand.
Taking advantage of the beautiful rural setting, the hospital offers views across the surrounding countryside and access to therapeutic spaces to promote healing and wellness.
The building process maximised the use of digital technology through the supply chain. Off-site manufactured components were installed on site to enable programme efficiencies, offer improved health and safety and maximised quality control.

It will help us to create a much improved care environment, timely access to emergency care and ensure patients get the best outcomes from their care.

Since 2007, BDP has worked with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board to deliver The Grange University Hospital in Gwent, South Wales. Through a meticulous planning strategy which mediated numerous environmental and heritage constraints we supported delivery of the hospital through all stages of the planning process, in a way which balanced flexibility for design evolution while providing certainty to support the Health Board’s business case. The hospital now provides major emergency and critical care to a population of over 600,000 people, supports around 2,900 jobs, and demonstrates the power of thoughtful planning to transform the health and prosperity of a region.
