King Edward’s School, Birmingham is an independent boys' school that has been central to learning in Birmingham for more than 450 years.
We were commissioned through limited competition by the school to develop designs for two phases of its strategic development plan.
Phase one of the development involved provision of the new language centre and extension and reordering of the science department. Our proposal implemented a creative use of existing available space, simplifying the circulation and connecting the new build through to the existing building at all floor levels, improving accessibility and minimising the clutter.
The site is set within the Edgbaston conservation area and the new elements of the scheme were designed to respect the hierarchy of the existing school buildings whilst maintaining a modern and crisp appearance.
