The newly completed building retains elements of its 1940s structure, now encased in a modern, sustainable envelope. It features LED lighting, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, air source heat pumps, and 750 square metres of solar panels, generating surplus energy for the grid.

The design includes electric bus charging points and a fully glazed concourse to maximise natural light and energy efficiency. Upgrades also include increased bus capacity, new National Express spaces, better pedestrian and cyclist facilities, and enhanced landscaping.

Ronan Connelly

“St Margaret's Bus Station is now one of the most beautiful and important transport hubs in the UK and an exemplar for modern, sustainable design. Modern architecture should be careful, not careless, and transport buildings should respond to the requirements of modern cities like Leicester. We are extremely happy that the station has won this award and it demonstrates the importance of creating a world-class, inner-city building that is both simple and practical whilst achieving net zero carbon. ”
