The timber façade and roof structure were designed to interweave with the surrounding Frysian polder landscape. The school’s auditorium makes use of the central staircase as seating and features a full glass façade which allows in lots of natural light. The building design is inspired by the black barns which are characteristic of the region. The building makes use of a biobased façade of burnt wood that folds to form a silhouette around the roofs of several houses. The sun exposed facades will naturally deflect sunlight to give the building rhythm and identity.

Zuyderzee Lemmer Lyceum plan

The building will have two separate hearts one that promotes social meeting and another which will be quieter. Ground floor classroom directly connect to outdoor learning spaces. This outdoor space will be used by its pupils to grow vegetable gardens, the produce from this is planned to be used in the schools teaching kitchens.

The design will be tailored to those that work there, allowing students to give their own interpretation to the space. An example of this is students designing their own seating areas within the building. This updated space will provide up to 355 students the opportunity to great education.

“By joining forces, we can now realise this beautiful, sustainable and future-proofed school building that fully supports the educational needs of the region. The design fits so well into our rural environment and we are continuing to explore ways to make the school as connected as possible local areas and nearby towns.”

Barbara Gardenier, Councillor for education at the municipality of De Fryske Marren.
