The UK’s fourth largest shopping centre has been transformed into a contemporary destination comprising 310 shops, 50 restaurants and a multi-screen cinema.
The UK’s fourth largest shopping centre has been transformed into a contemporary destination. Embracing Sheffield’s steel legacy, our proposal is inspired by the process of making steel, which is interpreted in abstract ways. The original centre was cluttered with impeded sightlines, having four zones that lacked distinction, poor legibility and orientation. Therefore we designed distinct districts with different mall finishes and environments. Construction work took place out of the centre’s opening hours. Columns and arches were removed, double height frontages and improved flooring were installed, plus wayfinding, signage and feature lighting artwork were added.
