The most significant new mainline station building in the UK for 40 years.

The most significant new mainline station building in the UK for 40 years. We expanded the concourse on two levels, arranged in a way that helps passengers get their bearings quickly. We opened up 2,000 sq m (21,500 sq ft) of retail space at platform level, with a pub and restaurants on the upper concourse. The services, plant and storage functions were concealed underneath the concourses. By adding a 500-space multi-storey car park with a linking bridge, we were able to clear all traffic from the station approach and create a wide new pedestrian path. The latest engineering techniques supported a new monopitch roof, with ETFE panels to maximise natural light.
