Two new state-of-the-art hospital buildings will bring Elderly Care, General Medicine, HIV and Clinical Infection wards up to modern standards, and establish the hospital as the Major Trauma Centre for the region. The new build will include 361 beds, 65% of which will be in single en-suite rooms, a helipad and additional parking spaces underground.

BDP was initially appointed by University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust in September 2010 to design and secure planning consent for demolition of the existing southern Royal Sussex County Hospital buildings, erection of two new buildings referred to as the Stage 1 and 2 Buildings, and a new service yard to the east forming Stage 3 of the development. This involved an interdisciplinary team, including: architecture; environmental engineering; interior design; landscape architecture; and town planning.

BDP’s solution fits a large scale hospital sensitively into its historic context. The topography of the site is fully exploited with the mass of the building broken down into fingers, which contain the bulk of the ward accommodation and face south with views over the English Channel.
BDP was involved in detailed negotiations with the local planning authority and Historic England, in relation to design and heritage issues. We also led extensive negotiations with the local authority on the complex Section 106 Agreement and planning conditions.

“The Louisa Martindale building is designed to deliver a reassuring, calming atmosphere for patients and staff to support and enhance the amazing care provided by the Trust.
It is an outstanding building. The light, open and airy feel and the views across the channel bring a new dimension to those who may be experiencing some of lives most stressful moments. It is all designed to be legible and navigable, and we know that this is an exciting point in time for everyone connected to this project. We are sure it will only support the Trust’s ongoing ambition to deliver new buildings which showcase the future of NHS facilities, today.”

BDP is currently submitting details to discharge planning conditions and S106 obligations, as well as amendment applications for the Stage 1 Building forming part of the 3Ts development, which is due for completion in November 2022. BDP is also working to develop the masterplan for Stages 2 and 3 of the development.
Awards
In 2012, we obtained a phased full planning permission for the Royal Sussex County Hospital’s Brighton 3Ts project, comprising the completed 11-storey Louisa Martindale Building and 5-storey Sussex Cancer Centre. In 2021 we were re-engaged to support the Trust in opening the Louisa Martindale Building on programme through discharge of conditions and Section 106 obligations and gaining a s73 consent to regularise the consent. We are currently working to obtain consent for a further S73 for the Sussex Cancer Centre to secure significant design changes that align the development with up-to-date clinical and funding requirements. Since 2012, we have built strong and trusted relationships with the Trust and LPA which have fostered a collaborative planning strategy, aligned objectives and built a broad base of support for the development. In recognition of our successful planning strategy, we won the RTPI South East Awards 2024 for ‘Best Project’ and ‘Best in Region’ for the Louisa Martindale Building.
