Vince Cable MP opens Teddington School

Teddington School was officially opened on Friday 13 May by the Government Business Secretary Vince Cable.

Speaking at the opening, and after a tour of the school, he said:  “I have noticed an extraordinary transformation in the way the kids behave, and the respect and enthusiasm they have  for their new school. This has come about from an extraordinary combination of brilliant design and architecture and school leadership, which have fused together in a very successful way and which I’m sure will grow and grow and be a great tribute to the community and the school.”

The school is an exploration of new ways of learning and creates a learning village around a social square, while re-integrating the students with the riverside environment. The design achieved the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and features a passive cooling system which passes air through tubes buried in the ground before supplying it to classrooms.

Speaking before the official opening, Richard Weeks, Headteacher at Teddington School, said: “I am very proud of the new school. But it is important the note that it isn’t just about bricks and mortar. The new building was designed to enhance the educational experience of the young people at Teddington, creating a new learning environment to support the staff and students, ensuring each individual succeeds to their full potential. I firmly believe that all our collective efforts have indeed enabled us to create, physically and culturally, a school and learning environment which is very much more appropriate to the needs and expectations of our children, future educators and employers and of society as a whole in the 21st century.”
