Waitrose in Bracknell has won a BREEAM Award achieving the highest scoring assessment in retail category. The winners represent the leading examples of construction projects assessed and certified, each demonstrating an holistic approach to the environmental aspects of its specification, design and construction. 2012 was a record year for BREEAM registrations and certifications, and since 1998 BREEAM has certified more than 16,000 projects, equating to over 250,000 buildings.
The new Waitrose supermarket is part of the regeneration of Bracknell town centre in Berkshire. It is Waitrose’s policy that all of their new build stores are BREEAM assessed, and the decision was made by Waitrose that an Outstanding rating should be sought for the Bracknell store.
The store features many innovations including an energy centre, charger points for electric vehicles in the car park, green roofs, sun pipes and extensive use of timber in the cladding and construction of the canopies.
BDP was lead consultant, architect for the shell and core, and sustainability consultant for the £6.4m building which opened in November 2011. Bamber & Reddan was architect for the fit-out of the store.
