Plans for a £300m extension to Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping mall have been unveiled by British Land, ahead of a public consultation due to start in June.
The 30,000 sqm Leisure Hall designed by BDP will add a range of dining and entertainment experiences not currently available at the centre. These include new restaurants, a state-of-the-art cinema, a new café court, gym and other leisure space.
Housed under a glazed roof, the extension will integrate with the existing centre to create a new multi-levelled, landscaped mall with high quality internal and external spaces. It has also been designed to accommodate large outdoor events including live music.
Architect director Jeremy Sweet said “The Leisure Hall extension will create a new identity for Meadowhall and provide a sequence of dynamic dining and entertainment spaces under a landmark glazed roof, significantly improving the customer’s experience of visiting the centre. The project will follow on from our extensive interior refurbishment of the centre itself, which is currently on site, creating a new holistic vision for Meadowhall.”
A detailed planning application is due to be submitted in the late summer. Start on site is set for 2018 with the scheme open to the public by late 2020.
