The hotel is divided into two blocks with the respective materials responding to the character of the neighbouring listed buildings. The five storey brick front block addresses the street and the adjacent Friar House, whilst the seven storey rendered rear block steps up next to the taller Turnbull Building and its glazed white brick façade. The glass and zinc clad lift and circulation links the two blocks. The generous window reveals create depth and help convey a strength and robustness to the façade.
The design makes the most of a natural slope across the site by creating a generous one and a half storey reception that slides out of the brick box making it readily visible and accessible when approaching from the railway station.
