The Grand Union transforms a previously derelict 22-acre site and reconnects the local area with the Grand Union Canal and River Brent. The building enhances accessibility to Stonebridge Park station and introduces new residential dwellings, employment opportunities, public spaces, and local amenities.
Phase 1 comprised of four distinct buildings of varying heights from 5 to 14 storeys accommodating 400 apartments. These structures house residents' facilities including a vibrant community centre, nursery, convenient food store, restaurant, café, dedicated residents' parking, and a high-quality public realm. Notably, two of the buildings are entirely dedicated to affordable housing, comprising a total of 72 apartments. Each apartment is designed to the same high-quality design standards with a common language of external materials and finishes
The buildings are arranged around a canal-side piazza with a variety of active ground-floor uses that seamlessly spill into the public realm. The design draws inspiration from the site's industrial heritage, employing carefully selected "found" materials, textures, and colours that pay homage to the canal's history. The buildings are clad in brickwork with subtle changes in texture and colour. Internally the use of warm timber and contrasting metalwork adds to the industrial aesthetic. Additionally, over 50% of the entire project is dedicated to green spaces.
